Menopause News article

We have recently undertaken a comprehensive review of BNF content on menopause. A new Menopause treatment summary has been created based on NICE guidelines and other evidence-based sources, providing up-to-date practical guidance on the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), vaginal oestrogens, and non-hormonal treatments, as well as other management options. Signposting to other valuable information such as MHRA HRT risk tables, NICE discussion aids on communicating the benefits and risks of HRT, and other clinical guidance is also included.

Clinical content unrelated to menopause that was previously included in the Sex hormones treatment summary is covered within other relevant treatment summaries, such as Endometriosis. Guidance regarding the management of menopause-associated symptoms in individuals with a history of breast cancer has been moved from the Breast cancer treatment summary to the Menopause treatment summary.

Drugs used in menopause have also been reviewed and updated; detailed information on the risks of HRT has been moved from the monographs to the new treatment summary to give it more context. We have also updated our guidance on the use of vaginal oestrogens for genitourinary symptoms of menopause (previously called vaginal atrophy).
