Awards and recognition
The PJ was shortlisted for nine national journalism awards in 2023, including ‘Best Podcast’ and ‘Best Section Team’ at the British Society of Magazine Editors (BSME) talent awards. Three of our journalists won awards in 2023: Dawn Connelly won Feature of the Year at the Association of British Science Writers awards, Julia Robinson was awarded Best Writer (News) at the BSME talent awards and Carolyn Wickware was awarded Pharmacy Writer of the Year at the Avicenna Media Awards. In 2022, the PJ was also shortlisted for seven awards, including ‘Media Brand of the Year’ at the PPA awards and ‘Podcast of the Year’ at the Medical Journalists’ Association Awards.

Nigel Praities, winner, Pharmacy Writer of the Year
A panel of judges recognised Nigel for his interviews with key leaders in pharmacy and commentary on racial disparities in pass rates for the General Pharmaceutical Council’s preregistration exam.

Carolyn Wickware, winner
Carolyn was included in a list of 30 journalists to watch for her work reporting on medicine shortages after obtaining confidential government reports.

On Julia’s award win, the judges said: “It’s clear that Julia lives and breathes her subject matter. She impressed the judges with her keen eye for detail and for pursuing unique feature angles that were hugely important for both the brand and the reader.”

Avicenna Media Awards
Carolyn Wickware, winner, Pharmacy Writer of the Year
The judges recognised Carolyn for her work to “raise the profile of the contractor’s plight regarding stock shortages, which can put patient health at risk” and for highlighting that online pharmacies are eight times more likely to fail General Pharmaceutical Council standards.
